1. Sulphur Banks
Address: Sulphur Banks Trail, Volcano.
This site is a bit of a paradox. You can smell the sulfur fumes in the air. You'd expect the rainfall in this area to be very acidic; you'll not be disappointed. The few measurements made indicate that from this perspective, it is a harsh environment. The paradox comes when you look at the plants. Species are abundant and many appear to be thriving, even some quite close to the sulfur vents.
2. Pu`u Loa Petroglyphs
Address: Chain of Craters Rd, Pāhoa.
This is a popular archaeological site in Hawaii. Pu'u Loa is a volcanic pressure dome that was formed during the eruption of Kāne Nui O Hamo about 550 years ago.

This is a scenic spot in Hawaii where you can see the area between the caldera's edge and outer cliffs of Kīlauea Caldera is a treeless plain. The ground just a few feet down is so hot that tree roots can not survive. But shallow-rooted grasses and plants grow here.
