About Sri Puthenkavu Bhagavathy Temple:

Sri Puthenkavu Bhagavathy Temple is situated in the tiny village of Elavoor on the banks of the Chalakkudy River. The temple world renowned as a great pilgrim centre as well as for its rarely ritual of 'aalthookkam'.(Aalthookkam is ritual in which a devotee who has been observing vratas for 41 days is taken to a 'chadu'( scaffold) by piercing four hooks on his back and circumbulating the temple three times and after that he is released from the chadu). The ritual was observed on the 'pathamudayam' day in the Malayalam month of Medom every year. In 1987 the temple authorities decided to stop the ritual after an ashtamangala prasna, realizing the desire of Devi to conduct a pushpabhishekam instead of aalthookkam.
